In the 1920’s and 30’s in the USA, Taxi-Dance Halls were places where working class men got to share a brief moment, the length of a dance, with young girls called taxi dancers. After buying a ticket, the client would hand the ticket to a chosen taxi dancer, from there the expression ‘a ticket-a-dance’. In this piece we follow three taxi dancers who have lost their job at the Dreamland club, a famous Taxi-Dance Hall with a sleazy reputation and that had to close up shop due to shady dealings. The three taxi dancers are unable to leave this place which was their home for several years. The unbreakable bond holds them back. Through a series of flashbacks, the deserted Dreamland and the mere shadow of its former glory become a playing field and provide an outlet for their fantasies.
‘The Literature on the walls spoke eloquently of forty beautiful girls and the dreamy music of Lonny Killula and his Melodic Hawaiins. I climbed one flight of echoing stairs to a booth and bought a ticket. Inside were the forty women, lined against the opposite wall, sleek in tight evening dresses, most of them blondes. Nobody was dancing, not a soul’. Extract of John Fante, Ask the Dust.
